desciable in the interests of navigation as well as of science generally, yet viewing the Character of the soil of Hong Kong I think it more prudent not to incur any preat Expenditure. for a complate magnetic. obserwatory till further invectigations have been made, I should therefore prefer Mr Price's schome in this respect as providing to a certain talent for magnetic observations without involving a large outlay of money .

Though I quite agree with Mefor Palomer in Considering tidal observations to be desirable, it does not seem to me to be Expedient to include them in the work of the Onewatory, at any rate, in the ferit instance. Accepting the more limited scheme

of obrerations proposed by Mr. Price, the Staff suggested by him seems well suited to the requirements of the Obsewatory. As
